An epidemiological study on health examination of the aged in home


Abstract
To evaluate the health state of the aged in home the author performed health examination and epidemiological survey from July 1, 1983 to September 30. 1983. The study population was 1,050 aged person, over 60 year old, lived in Kwangju areas. The analytical information were obtained from the survey of health interview and physical examination.
The summarized results were as followings:
1. Among of the 1,050 aged respondents, male was 39.8% and female was 60.2%. Otherwise, the highest group was 42.0% in 6569 age group, 64.0% in non educated group, 21.9% in protestant group respectively.
2. In both sexes, respondents felt their health worse than before 60 years.
3. During the last 5 years, 7.6% of female and 6.2% of male experienced out-patient treatment over 5 days and 6.2% male and 3.6% female experienced in-patient treatment over 10 days.
4. In comparison of the same aged group, 45.9% male thought their health better. But 42. 6% of female considered their own health worse than same aged group.
5. To keep their health state 27. 0% of the aged practiced some method in daily life. _Early morning stroll and light physical exercise was more frequent performed in male (29.2%) than female aged (13.8%), but diet control was female (7.1%) than male (2.9%).
6. In both sexes, drug store was utilized more frequently when they were sickness. And the hospital, health service center, herbs shop, folk remedies in order, respectively.
7. There was 43.6% drinker in male and 34.9% female, 61.5% smoker in male and 35.9% in female.
8. Asthenopia (80. 1 %) was most frequent subjective complaint and dizziness (66.2%), lumbago (64.9%), sharp pain of shoulder and extremities (58.1 %), feeling anxiety (57.9%) in order.
9. Generalized results after health examination were that of normal limit 61.5%, pulmonary tubrculosis 9.7%, hypertension 7.6%, diabetes 7.5%, hepatic disorder 6.1 %, cardiovascular disorder 3.2%, anemia 1.4%, respiratory disorder 1.2%, renal disorder 0.5% etc. By sex, in male pulmonary tbc. was most frequent (15.5%) and in female hypertension (8.4%).
10. Pulmonary tbc., diabetes, hepatic disorder were more prevalent in male. But hypertension, anemia, cardiovascular and respiratory disorder were more prevalent in female.
11. 38.5% of respondents for treatment was arranged to that of 20.6% in out patient, 12.3% in domestic treatment and 5.4% in hospitalized, respectively.
